FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is a difference between 3 and 7 gears?

Bicycles Vivelo as standard have 3 gears, for an additional fee ($99) , you can update it to 7 gears option. The planetary gear is hidden in the rear hub, so all visible elements are built-in, which does not exposed them to dirt or damage that could happen to a traditional gear.

The advantages of this solution is ease of use. We do not have to wonder if the chain is in the right line, - relevant gear at the front and rear. When changing gears, we do not even have to pedal, we can change the gear when we stop and waiting for example to change the lights on the crossing (which is absolutely not recommended for traditional external derailleurs). Another plus is its failure-free.

The whole system is tightly closed, which means it is not exposed to dirt and changing weather conditions. It causes its longer life and the only thing that the average user needs in this case to care for cleanliness and proper lubrication of the chain

7 gears increase the comfort of driving. Higher number of gears is especially useful when you drive slop terrain. Moreover, if you plan to have an additional load (eg child seat, laded basket etc.), 7 gears are very helpful. The number of gears we should choose should depend on the physical condition and the preferences of the cyclist, because the differences between the hubs are based on the percentage of gear ratios in each gear.

Illustrating in a very simplified way, changing the gears of the Shimano Nexus 3 hub from the first to the second is as when we changed gear in the Shimano Nexus 7 hub from the first gear directly to the fourth. We can easily notice that we still have the second and third ratio, which allow us to develop speed smoothly. In any city we can easily find many hills and to ride them easily and most efficiently the most suitable choice will be a seven-speed hub.

Very important advantage is the fact that we don’t have to shift gears while driving, but we can decide on it when stop or waiting at traffic lights. What is important, the simplicity of the device allows for comfortable and moreover easy handling of only one shifter that will change the gear.

2. Is the varnish/paint (powder coating) durable?

To create our bikes we use the highest quality confirmed by a certificate varnish/paint directly from Switzerland,. Vivelo bicycles are painted with unique powder varnishes, made on order in the Swiss laboratories of the world's leading paint industry- KABE. These powder coatings are characterized by durability, high resistance to mechanical and atmospheric damage, exceptional gloss, and also protection against corrosion. The received certificate is a confirmation and a guarantee of maintaining the highest quality procedures during painting, affecting the excellent quality of the varnished/ painted elements. This is undeniable priority for Vivelo.

3. Breaks in Vivelo bikes

All Vivelo bikes have, as standard, a "pedal" main brake, commonly known as Torpedo. It is located in the rear hub. Models La Donna, Rider and Rider X also have a V-break auxiliary brake. In model Chopper you  can use also Shimano roller brake.

4. What is the difference between roller brakes and v-brakes?

Roller brakes are considered to be failure-free and known for their resistance in all weather conditions. The entire braking system is located in the center of the hub. This type of brakes is mostly used in city style bikes. Definitely the advantages of this type of brakes are that the brake is sealed, so it is resistant to sand or other contaminants. The disadvantages include that during long trips, they might overheat. Brakes are also not suitable for bikes that require a lot of braking power, they will not work, for example, in mountain bikes.

This type of brakes are attached to the frame fork, and its design resembles long arms to which the brake pads are directly attached. Through the fork passes clamping rope, which is permanently connected to one of the arms. After tightening the brake handle, the cable shortens, which makes the pads tighten to the rim of the bike. This type of brakes is mainly used on MTB bikes. The advantages of V-brakes, which are very popular jaw brakes, are certainly that they are cheap and easy to service. They stand out with quite good braking power, but although they perform well on flat terrain, rain or mud affect braking performance and this is the biggest disadvantage of these brakes.

What is the difference between these two auxiliary brakes? The roller brake works similarly to ABS in the car, thanks to the brake modulator placed inside the brake. What does it mean? During braking, the bike slows down and does not cause the wheel to lock completely, reducing the risk of the falling through steering wheel or uncontrolled slipping. The roller brake works reliably in all weather conditions, which affects the cyclist's safety. This kind of break has very low failure rate.

Adjusting the saddle position is very simple. We adjust the saddle by fastening seatpost clamp, which is in the place where the seatpost enters the frame. We can move seatpost in or out the frame to ensure the ideal height of the saddle.

To adjust the saddle you will need an Allen key No. 6.  First you need to remove the saddle with the seatpost from the bicycle frame, ( look at HOW TO ADJUST HEIGHT OF A SADDLE).
